Reading the pupils
Direct = the lit eye constricts. Consensual = the other eye constricts too (bilateral pretectal → Edinger–Westphal projection). The swinging flashlight test exposes a relative afferent defect: the affected pupil paradoxically dilates when the light reaches it.
